I have been thinking a lot about the environment lately. This is my first look into this problem and you should expect to see more on the subject in the future. So much has been happening all over the world to harm our planet. Industrial pollution, GMO food, the ongoing catastrophe of Fukushima and of course whatever that is that we see coming from all of the planes crisscrossing our skies. I recently read that the world will only have 64% of the water it needs in a few short years. All of this can seem so overwhelming. What can anyone do to stop this destruction? I have decided to look at my own life and find where I can make changes to make the world better. While pondering my impact on the planet, I could not help but realize there are things we do regularly in our lives, that if we could make a small change individually , would collectively be very meaningful. Our weekly laundry is a very simple place to start.
Detergents and laundry products such as soaps and hand sanitizers have become commonplace. However, many of these products contain environmentally harmful chemical ingredients and substances. This is partly because neither the US FDA nor the EPA requires manufacturers of laundry products to disclose the ingredients they use, which means they can practically use any chemical substance, regardless of its toxicity. Fortunately, earth friendly laundry products are available that typically contain environmentally safe ingredients. With that in mind, here are some of the benefits of using eco friendly laundry products:
Earth friendly products do not typically contain toxic chemicals such as phosphates, butyl, ammonia, formaldehyde, chlorine, parabens, sulfates, EDTA, and glycol ether. This is a big plus because toxic substances usually find their way into water streams and other water reservoirs such as rivers and dams. To put this into perspective, a study carried out by the US Geological Survey found that a staggering 69% of rivers and streams in America have traces of disinfectants and metabolites found in laundry detergents. What’s more, another study carried out by the University of Washington found that many top-selling laundry products contain toxic chemicals. In fact, each of the products tested in this study contained at least one chemical ingredient classified as hazardous and toxic by the FDA. The good news is you can protect the environment by choosing eco-friendly products for your home.
Improve Your Health
Another benefit of using the best green laundry products is they do not contain known carcinogenic chemicals. Remember, manufacturers of laundry detergents do not have to disclose the ingredients they use. According to a report published by the New York Times, many of the laundry products on the market today contain the chemical substance 1,4-dioxane, which is a carcinogen. Another study carried out by the respected Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that only seven out of the 271 widely used laundry detergents scored a rating of A. In addition, two surveys carried out by Anne Steinemann, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Washington, found that 10% of American consumers, especially asthmatics, experienced adverse health effects after using common laundry products. To avoid developing diseases such as cancer or other health complications in the future, you should use eco friendly products that contain natural non-carcinogenic and nontoxic ingredients.
Most laundry products on the market today contain toxic chemicals such as 1,4-dioxane, acetone, chloromethane, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, and butyl. So why not avoid polluting the environment or inhaling toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), by using eco friendly laundry detergent instead.
